Lenses for driving, day and night
Driving is where sunglasses stop being an accessory and start being equipment. It is also where we see the most confusion between two products that solve opposite problems, so this note covers both.
Daytime: the glare is horizontal
The worst light on a day drive is not the sun itself, which you mostly keep out of frame. It is the bounce: off the wet lane ahead, off your own hood, off the chrome and glass of traffic. Bounced light off flat surfaces is polarized horizontally, and a polarized lens is built to block exactly that plane. The white sheet lying on the road switches off, lane markings come back, and your eyes stop doing the constant small squint that turns a two hour drive into a headache.
One honest caveat: some LCD dashboards dim at an angle through a polarized lens. Most drivers tilt their head once, note it, and never think about it again. If your instrument cluster is fully digital, check it in the first mile.
Low sun: the two worst half hours
Commute timing puts the sun on the horizon right when the roads are fullest. No lens removes a star sitting in your windscreen, but a polarized tint takes the scatter and the road mirror out of the scene, which is most of what actually blinds you. Keep a pair in the door pocket of every car you drive. That is not sales talk; it is the entire reason we sell three-packs.
Night: the opposite problem
At night the enemy is not too much light but badly aimed light: oncoming LED headlights and their halo. A dark lens here is dangerous, and a polarized film does nothing useful, which is why our night driving glasses carry neither. They are lightly tinted yellow to soften the harsh blue end of headlight glare and take the edge off the starburst, while passing enough light to keep the dark parts of the road visible. UV400 filtering stays, because the spec costs nothing to keep.
